Remembering "back to school days" in my little hometown of Carlsbad, New Mexico

By the end of the summer, I was ready to start back to school, ready to walk to school with my friends on cool September days, not a care in the world.

Back to school meant new school supplies:  a big chief tablet, jumbo pencils and crayons, blunt tipped scissors, and school paste in a jar.

These, of course, were carried to school in a cigar box, our school supply box!

My momma always made me a new dress each year.  Little girls (nor big girls either) never wore anything but dresses to school.  Such beautiful clothes I had all made by momma.

The outfit was usually topped off by a new pair of Keds!

I remember "reading circle" where we all sat around the teacher and read about "Jack and Janet" and "Tip and Mitten".  Many memories come flooding back today as a new school year is beginning for many children, my grandchildren included.  I pray for them many happy memories such as the ones I had during my childhood.  Wishing you all a blessed September week!

And think of all the school beginnings you had as a teacher, too!
I had a few dresses made with that pattern, I think! My mama sewed, too.
I'm so proud of my students because they brought all their supplies and they are quite happy with them!

I went to school on the other side of the Atlantic. We had the same reading primers but the dog and cat were named Nip and Fluff and the children were re-named Janet and John. Wonder why they reproduced the same books but renamed the characters?
After a long career in teaching and now being retired, I so miss that first day back to school feeling.

Vicki, you brought back lots of memories for me, too. I loved all the autumn displays the teacher had around the room with numbers and letters on them; acorns with happy faces, apples teaching us our letters and learning to read. To this day I love to see those cheerful decorations in the stores.

I hope your grandchildren bring back happy memories from their first days back to school.

Much love,

Vicki,
Oh, these bring back sweet memories for me too. My mom used to sew all my school clothes, and I remember the Simplicity patterns well. And the Chief notepads, how wonderful! What a special post this is today.

Happy September!

Love,

This really made me smile, my friend. It felt good to look back to that innocent time. I always loved my new crayons best. They were so pretty.

I haven't been blogging because of Mom, and we lost her this summer. I want to post about her, but it is still too raw. I was so blessed to have a MIL like her, and I miss her more than I can begin to say. Thank you for your kind words. They were so appreciated.

Much, much love to you, my sweet friend...
