First roses of the season: Old Blush

Hello, sweet friends, and welcome to Bunny Cottage! I just cut the first roses of the season. Every year it is one of my favorite and first roses to bloom, and it is called "Old Blush". This rose dates back to 1752, and it is a china rose. Most of the roses I grow are either chinas, teas, or noisettes. These are the antique roses that do best in the south. When I say "tea", I am not talking about the more modern hybrid teas. These antique roses have been around for many decades. These are the roses that you find growing on old homesteads and cemeteries throughout our country. They have survived with virtually no care at all. Well, I hope that signs of spring are coming to you. Have the sweetest of days!
"Sweet spring, full of sweet days and roses, a box where sweets compacted lie."~George Herbert

Dear Vicki,

Your roses are beautiful! I loved hearing about their history too! It is nice to know what kind of roses grow well in our hot and humid south! :)

I love your hand painted antique roses sign and your flowers signs. They are so beautiful! Your Bunny Cottage is always so lovely! We are having signs of Spring, and the weather has been wonderful these past few days! I hope you have the sweetest of days too!

Much love to you sweet friend,

Hello Vicki... I posted a comment, but it disappeared into thin air! I posted about heirloom roses first thing this morning too, and am off to our garden center now to buy some more... I love the really old varieties like you are talking about... my sister and I saved some from the 1800's from an old abandoned home they were going to tear down... they still thrive beautifully! I love your beautiful roses sign! xoxo Julie Marie

Roses are gorgeous, but sad to say we will not see a rose in our garden for months. But hopefully some tulips soon.

How beautiful! I can almost smell them from here!! Now, please tell us how we can either transplant or get slips and grow our own from these old southern spots of forgotten roses! I live in east Texas and see wild roses on the fences around here, and would love to get one for my own!!

So lovely. I walk by a house that has the sweetest smelling pink tea roses in the summer. I stop to smell each time I pass. We must wait a good while for roses here, but first . . . the peonies. They burst forth just when school is out!

Your roses are beautiful and I love them. My favorite. We are 5 days away from the first day of spring, but I don't think it is going to be that warm. We just barely made it up to 50 degrees late this afternoon suppose to be in the thirties in the morning. Take care.

You are so lucky to have your first roses of the year. I have notice that ours is coming alive, but no roses yet. I love those signs, they are just too pretty.

Good morning, Vicki!
A little visit here before work to send me off with a smile :)
Looks like the two of us are thinking 'roses' this week!
I love it that yours are home-grown and doing well in your yard*

...and doesn't it seem that everything that is low-maintenance is heartier!
God bless you always ~ Maria
