School will soon be out for the summer. When I was a young girl, the end of school meant time for swimming at the beach. The "beach" for me meant the Pecos River which ran right through the center of Carlsbad, New Mexico. It was an oasis for us in the hot New Mexico desert. There was sand all along the sides of the river. We built many a sandcastle there and swam out to the small "island" in the middle of the river. As a teenager, we sunbathed and worked very hard on a summer tan.
I also gathered flower bouquets especially roses from my neighbor's beautiful red rose bush. She graciously let the neighborhood kids gather roses for a rose corsage which we usually wore to church on Sunday mornings.
Summer also meant time for cooking delicious mud pies which we served on dishes very similar to the ones above. I loved my set of tin dishes and played with them for hours on end. Maybe that is why I love beautiful dishes so much today. Who knows? I do think our childhood plays a very important part in shaping our lives. Dear friends, I have just returned from taking care of four of my precious grandchildren, my granddaughters, Ally, Maggie, Henna and Olivia. Their mommy and daddy went on a dream vacation to Ireland. The girls are ages two, four, six and eight so you can see, we had a very "busy" time. I am one pooped grandma, but I wouldn't trade this experience for anything. I hope this fine day finds you doing well. Do you have any special memories of summer? I know summer is a way off, but it will be here before we know it! Sending you happy wishes always!

I loved reading this, Vicki, and I'm glad you had such a wonderful time with your grandchildren.
And I loved your memories of summer. Mine are similar... trips to the water (in our case the beach) where we would spend hours playing. And we would crab and eat them for supper. And hours and hours and HOURS riding horses. And baking mud pies in similar dishes to yours. I loved to water ski as well, and when I was older spent hours and hours and HOURS on the boat. But oh, how I loved summer! My birthday fell in the middle of it, and my mother planned such elaborate parties that people planned their vacations around it because they always had hay rides and every sort of game imaginable. My father was an elected official, so I invited everyone in the county who was my age. Good thing it was a small county! ;-) That changed as I aged, but those parties were magical, mainly because I got to help plan them and had a part in creating a great time for the other kids.
XO,
Sheila
Hello Vicki, your blog is a delightful mixture of vintage eye candy and pure charm. Thanks for visiting and for your warm comment.
Have a lovely week.
Connie :)
Oh, I bet you are VERY tired! I bet you miss those princesses, too!
Hi Vicki, I know you had a very enjoyable time with your grandchildren and were pooped. I know I get tired and mine are older then yours. Summer is a time for being outside enjoying the sun, making mud pies, playing in the mud after a rain, making dishes out of dirt. Having a lot of kids at our house, that because of so many brothers and sisters. I always enjoy the summer. This one will be watching one play ball and the other two riding their horses. Have a wonderful day. Hugs and Prayers from your Missouri Friend.
Our memories sound so similar Vicki :) Especially the working on our tans part as teenagers! Now I wish I hadn't done so much of it...lol!
hugs from here...
